Substitution patterns

This chapter explains how to enter the patterns used by a block or a range substitution. The substitution window opens via Range → Substitution → Block substitution or Range → Substitution → Range substitution.

Layout

You can enter up to nine different patterns. The label above the pattern area tells you which pattern (corresponding to which range) you are currently editing. Below the pattern area, the patterns that are in use are marked red, the unused ones grey.

Most of the editing functionality you know from the main window is available here, including the keyboard shortcuts. The main thing you cannot do is select a part of a pattern — since substitution patterns are at most 12 × 12 threads, this is rarely needed.

In block substitution mode all patterns must have the same size. The pattern area is therefore framed in red; make sure each of your patterns fills the framed space completely.

Convenient operations

In addition to the normal editing commands, the substitution window offers:

Range / colour mapping

The base pattern is assigned to the weft floats; patterns 1 through 9 are assigned to the matching ranges. To make it easier to recognise which range you are editing, each pattern is shown in the colour of its range.
